Preparing For Gasparilla

This week, we're getting ready for an invasion. Every year, pirates take over our fine city of Tampa, culminating in that raucous celebration and parade along Bayshore Boulevard that features floats, rowdy pirate wannabes, some well-concealed alcoholic beverages, and lots of beads.

With the main parade on Jan. 28, we present our five top places to help you look and dress the part.

Why Not Boutique, 3423 West Bay to Bay Blvd., Tampa – Sure there are several boutiques in South Tampa selling cute Gasparilla gear, but Why Not has always been a favorite. This year the boutique not only has women's shirts and sweaters, skull and crossbone scarves and jewelry, but also kids' T-shirts and men's Ts. If you're going for something more feminine than a skull, check out the screen-printed corset tank tops. The bling-bling rings are a great accessory – and price – too. If you go, make sure to say "Hi" to Cloe, the boutique dog.

Sunshine Thrift Store, 4304 S. Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa (or similar second-hand store) – Have a family you need to turn into a motley crew on the cheap? A thrift store may be your answer. Sunshine Thrift offers up racks of white shirts, black pants and other hand-me-downs that can be easily transformed into a costume for a pirate or wench by channeling your imagination and 7th-grade home ec skills.

Bead Barn, 3015 West Barcelona Street, Tampa – No self-respecting wannabe pirate would be seen at the parade without at least one strand of beads, but there's no need to wrestle them away from the kids standing around you along the route. Bead Barn features strand upon strand of beads in a variety of colors and sizes, so you'll look like a Gasparilla veteran – even if it's your first invasion. They even supply the various krewes.

Michaels (various locations) – Gasparilla isn't just about dressing yourself. Anyone who lives in South Tampa can tell you the area takes on a Halloween feel when their neighbors deck their houses up in flags, lights and various pirate gear. Craft stores such as Michaels give creative types an opportunity to get into the spirit without having to brave the masses along Bayshore.

The Platinum Zipper, 2800 MacDill Ave., Suite N, Tampa – Gasparilla isn't just about parades and imbibing. Let's not forget the endless stream of parties, Queen and King coronations and festive galas. The Platinum Zipper carries cocktail dresses that would make any pirate want to drop anchor in your lagoon. They sell off the rack and carry exclusive designs from Karishma Creations and Jonathan Kayne. If you don't see something you like, they can order what you need at a price that won't break the bank. Cocktail dresses start at $69 in sizes up to 30. If you're really want to shine, check out the Jonathan Kayne creation with LED lights built into the bustier. -- On the National Mall in Washington, Martin Luther King Jr. is a towering, heroic figure carved in stone. On the Broadway stage, he's a living, breathing man who chain smokes, sips liquor and occasionally curses.

As Americans honor King's memory 44 years after he was assassinated, the image of the slain civil rights leader is evolving.

THE MEMORIAL

The new King memorial, which opened in August in the nation's capital, celebrates the ideals King espoused. Quotations from his speeches and writings conjure memories of his message, and a 30-foot-tall sculpture depicts King emerging as a "stone of hope" from a "mountain of despair," a design inspired by a line of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Some gaze upon this figure in silence. Some smile and pull out cell phone cameras. Others chat about how closely the statue resembles King. And some are moved to tears.

"Just all that this man did so that we could do anything and be anything," said Brandolyn Brown, 26, of Cheraw, S.C., who visited the memorial Saturday with her aunt and cousin.

"I know it took a lot more than him to get to where we are, but he was a big part of the movement."

Brown's aunt, Gloria Drake, 60, of Cheraw, S.C., said she remembers King almost as though he was Moses leading his people to the promised land, even when there were so many reasons to doubt things would get better in an era of segregated buses, schools and lunch counters.

"It was really just hostile," she said. "... And then we had a man that comes to tell us things are going to be better."

"Don't be mad, don't be angry," she recalled King's message. "Just come together in peace."

They said King's lasting legacy is the reality of equality and now having a black president. Drake said President Barack Obama reminds her of King with his "calmness" even in the face of anger.

Christine Redman, 37, visited the memorial with her husband, James Redman, 40, and their young son and daughter. She said they also feel a personal connection to King.

"We're a mixed family, and we know that without a lot of the trials that he went through to help end segregation and help the races to become one, we would not be able to have the freedoms to love who we want to love and be accepted in the world," she said.

Her son, 8-year-old Tyler, echoed his mom: "And be who we want to be."

The family tries to celebrate King's birthday by finding a way to serve others, they said. They were thinking about volunteering at a food pantry or donating toys for needy kids.

When he thinks of King, James Redman said he thinks of hope. Still, he said, King's legacy is lost on many.

"Dr. King was about love and about cooperation and compromise and working together," he said. "We don't see a whole lot of that in our leaders. We don't see a whole lot of it in our citizenry."

THE STAGE

On Broadway, theatergoers are seeing a different version of King – one that is more man than legend.

The realism was refreshing for Donya Fairfax, who marveled after leaving a matinee of "The Mountaintop" that she had never really thought of King cursing, as actor Samuel L. Jackson does while portraying King in the play.

"He was human and not someone who was above fault," said the 48-year-old, visiting from Los Angeles. "He cursed. He did things that people do behind closed doors. He was regular."

For some, such a portrayal would seem to chip away at King's memory. But for Natalie Pertz, who at 20 has come to know King only through the gauzy view of history, it seemed a precious reminder that it is not beyond the reach of the ordinary and the flawed to effect change.

"It's important for people our age to see that he wasn't this saint-like figure," she said. "It's making you see that just because you're not perfect, it doesn't mean you can't do good."

For M.E. Ward, seeing an in-the-flesh incarnation of King brought her back more than 40 years, to when she watched his soaring speeches on the television. No matter how human he seemed on stage, she said, he still carried a godly gift.

"Still charismatic, still an orator, and an individual who was able to move people through his speech," she said, adding that King enlightened the world with a message "to be peaceful, to be patient, to be non-violent."

No matter how distant his presence is now, that legacy is still very relevant, she said, in what she called "a world of turmoil and violence, constant violence."

Do people idealize him too much?

"They don't do it enough!" said 64-year-old Elisabeth Carr, who cried through most of the play, feeling some of the pain she felt when the civil rights leader died. "The younger generation, they don't know anymore. ... They don't understand what they went through."

After traveling more than five hours with three friends – all of them African-American – to see Saturday's matinee, Mariko Tapper Taylor said seeing King in all his flaws did nothing to diminish his legacy.

"It's better to remember him as human," she said. "Who's flawless? It just shows that there's another side of him."

For her, the holiday remains very personal, Taylor said.

One of her friends, Dr. Donnita Scott, chimed in:

"If it wasn't for him we probably wouldn't be doctors," she said, nodding at the group, which includes two ER physicians and a psychiatrist.

Dr. Jan Thomas agreed:

"We're standing on that mountaintop."

Define your decorating style

You want to work hard at getting it right but the result has to look as though it's been thrown together in five minutes!

Your living room is the place where family and friends sit when visiting, so you should make a special effort to create a comfortable harmonious environment. Your living room is usually the first room you seem upon entering your apartment.

The living room has to be shown well but in many cases the living room also has to be able to carry off other functions such as a dining room, playroom or office.

An eye for design

If at all possible, take your time and try not to pressure yourself or let others rush you. Spend time looking for ideas and inspiration in books, magazines and online see article about mood boards.

Make a point of looking around houses that are open to the public, such as 'Showhomes' and don't forget to take mental notes when you are out dining in restauarants, as the design work has probably been done by an experienced interior designer!

What attracts you?

What colour do you like? Light or dark? Strong or muted? And what about textures ? Do you like antiques or modern? What type of rooms do you like the most - cosy or ultra modern?

Don't design to impress others - design for yourself and your family after all friends just visits, you have to live there.

Traditional warmth: A traditional style is generally formal, sophisticated and timeless, using antiques, rich woods, overstuffed seating and muted understated colours. The emphasis in a traditional room is on comfort, style and classic refined elegance.

Fabrics are rich and luxuries, fixture and fittings of high quality and accessories includes paintings, vintage prints and framed personal mementos. Traditional rooms are thoughtfully composed and generally have a formal feel.

Modern elegance: Classic modern (contemporary style) treats interior spaces almost as pieces of three-dimensional art, balancing form, shape, colour and texture.

Surfaces are plain, colours are usually clean and pure and shapes are geometric with immaculate detail and finishing. The whole look is pared down and polished.

Country comfort: Signature elements are materials and textures that are natural rather than man-made. Furniture that is simple and hand crafted and an absence of modern artefact's. Country comfort today is called many thing such as romantic, rustic, country house and shaker just to name a few.

Casual blends: It's a well chosen and harmonious mix of furniture, fixtures, colours and accessories that appeal to you.

Casual requires a confident hand to team up ancient and modern, to combine the clean lines of contemporary with the warmth of country and tie it all together with colour and texture.

The most successful casual rooms generally confine themselves to two or three different styles and frequently use a common decorating theme such as colour and shape.

Creating the prefect living room

Do

•Use magazines for inspiration. Tear out pictures of furniture items, rooms, colours and patterns and create your own mood board which you can use as a point of reference.

•Use borders or fringing to revitalise curtains or furniture and to pick up colours from an focal item from the living room.

•Have furniture of varying heights to add interest to a room and create a homely effect.

•Place lighting at different levels in the room. Using a combination of uplighters, table lamps and standard lamps will add warmth and atmosphere.

•Keep lampshades up to date, either by replacing or customising. Shapes change regularly!

•Consider having curtains made to measure if your budget allows it. Apart from the obvious benefits of being able to choose the fabric and colours, they will fit your windows exactly.

Don't

•Have single chairs in a room used for entertaining, as it invites a person to sit alone and this can make other guests feel uncomfortable. Instead group chairs together in pairs or use sofas if space permits it.

•Hoard old, worn accessories such as saggy cushions and curtains. Mend or update with new coverings or fillings if possible. If not, it could be time to start on a fresh again.

•Worry about what your friends will think - it is your apartment and only you have to live there.

•Be afraid of colour or patterns. Experiment and have fun – you can always change it again

The girl and her dog, they were fine (wow) Until they left a doody -- that's a crime (bow wow)
It's not just a stinky situation -- skipping scooping poses a public health hazard. For one, pet feces carry bacteria, viruses and parasites into waterways that can cause unpleasant infections such as giardia and E. coli. More indirectly, the excrement also releases nutrients into the water that can feed algae, kill marine life, contaminate beaches and send unlucky swimmers home with bouts of diarrhea or hives. Unlike wild-animal feces, dog poop does not biodegrade quickly," the Post reported last week. It also kills the grass; dog poop is not a fertilizer.
When it rains, feces left on the ground can wash into storm drains and ditches, which then flow untreated to the nearest lake, stream or wetland and ultimately wind up in the larger bodies of water connected to our drinking water.
"Pet waste is one of the primary sources of bacterial contamination in our local streams, It's in almost all the water samples we've tested."
Of course, once you do scoop the poop, there remains the question of what to do with it.
Simply picking it up and putting it in the trash is the best way to go!

As most of you know each year the ContraVest FAMILY, Friends, Vendors, Residents, and Contractors all come together to adopt Bernadette Hanlon our BEAUTIFUL FRIEND and CO-WORKER to give her 6 daughters a Christmas they will never forget!

For those of you who have not heard of Bernadette’s story, she is a single mom with 3 girls of her own and a less than 5 years ago her oldest daughter had a regular babysitting job to watch 3 little girls. Her daughter had an unexpected school event on the same night she had committed to babysitting. The girl’s mother’s name was Amy, that night Bernie offered to cover for her daughter by watching Amy’s girls in her home. Amy’s oldest daughter 13 at the time decided to stay home alone while the other girls stayed with Bernie. That night a turn of events drastically changed all of their lives forever. Amy’s ex-husband broke into Amy’s home tied up her daughter and waited with a knife for Amy to return. When Amy walked into their home she was brutally attacked and murdered in front of her 13 year old daughter. Luckily Amy’s boyfriend who was parking the car walked in just in time to save Amy’s daughter, he too was stabbed in the struggle and fortunately survived. Amy’s daughter’s had only one living relative a grandmother who was elderly and unable to care for the girls… Bernie took these distraught little girls into her home because they had no one. Their father was arrested and charged with their mother’s murder. Fast forward nearly 5 years, Bernie has spent countless hours fighting the system to protect these children. She spent numerous hours at trial to see that their father paid for his crime and numerous hours at doctor’s appointments for child counseling, she is proud to tell everyone that she was able to officially ADOPT the girls!

As you can imagine it’s a difficult job being a single mother of 6 girls! Bernie’s 3 girls have sacrificed so much by welcoming their new sister’s into their very small home. Amy’s daughters have suffered an unforgettable loss in the murder of their mom. No matter how difficult things have been Bernie has been the one constant in their life! Bernie is an “ANGEL” in every since of the word!

It is our honor each year to give this beautiful and certainly deserving family a wonderful Christmas one that they will remember and cherish for years to come! Christin, Wendy and Darla will head up the fundraiser this year! We ask that you donate whatever you can--no amount is too small! For our resident Pink-O-Ween party, we held a raffle with donated items from our vendors, and rent discounts from Conravest. All of the monies raised went to The Brandon Outreach Clinic, which gives free medical care to families in need. We made coffee mugs filled with goodies for the volunteers, and delivered everything yesterday. I was truly amazed by what these wonderful angels do for people, who without their volunteered time, would go without life saving medical attention. I have personally chosen this “charity” as my new focus, and Jason and I have committed to making weekly donations from their “wish list”. Below is the letter I received today, as well as some awesome pictures of these precious souls! Enjoy!

What a wonderful surprise for the clinic and our volunteers. They were all thrilled with the coffee mugs filled with the assorted goodies. It really was like Christmas for them. We are also grateful for the generous donation as it will help us purchase the resources needed to provide medical care for our uninsured patients. We are always looking for new community partners who will embrace our cause and we are grateful to you and the residents of the Addison for taking the time to learn about the clinic and help support our mission of providing access to health care for those in need in our local community. The History of Labor Day

History

The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882, by the Central Labor Union of New York. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair, which it had been observed to commemorate. All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.

Pattern of celebration

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parties. Speeches or political demonstrations are more low-key than May 1 Labor Day celebrations in most countries, although events held by labor organizations often feature political themes and appearances by candidates for office, especially in election years. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer recess. Similarly, some teenagers and young adults view it as the last weekend for parties before returning to school, although school starting times now vary.

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. In high society, Labor Day is (or was) considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable for women to wear white.

Sports. Labor Day marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day. The Southern 500 NASCAR auto race was held that day from 1950 to 1983 in Darlington, South Carolina. At Indianapolis, the National Hot Rod Association hold their finals to the U.S. Nationals drag race. Most school districts that started summer vacation in mid june will resume school near this day (schools that had summer begin near memorial day will have already been in session for about 3 weeks).

ST. PETERSBURG --
While the center of Hurricane Irene will stay 200 miles off Florida's Atlantic shores, the state's eastern coastal counties will still encounter some strong elements tied to the massive, Category 3 hurricane.

Irene has started turning to the north-northwest, with the eye of the storm approaching Abaco Island in the northern Bahamas.

Irene's outer rain bands will push ashore mid-day Thursday. Expect periods of heavy rain through the afternoon and evening. Winds will begin to build, eventually running in the 20 to 25 mph range, with gusts easily reaching the 30 to 35 mph pace, with some 40 to 45 mph peaks possible.

Wind advisories will continue through Thursday afternoon. Seas will also increase dramatically, along with the surf along the coastline.

Irene will move over the Bahamas today. Some strengthening is expected. It may be a Category 4 storm by some time tonight. The storm has the potential to make landfall over or close to the North Carolina coast this weekend.'

The east coast of Florida will continue to see rains push ashore overnight, as wind shift and come in from the north at 15 to 25 mph Friday morning.

"You can see the cloud deck starting to push over Florida. Showers and storms have been around the Miami area and south Florida all the way up the east coast. For us, we're going to get some fast-moving showers on the outer edges of this storm," said Bay News 9 Meteorologist Diane Kacmarik. "It has started to move toward the north-northwest, which means it will stay east of our state but it's such a large circulation. That's why it's getting breezy out there right now."

Latest advisory
At 2 p.m., the center of Hurricane Irene was located near latitude 26.5 north, longitude 77.2 west. The storm is about 105miles north-northeast of Nassau and 610 miles south of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

Irene is moving toward the north-northwest near 14 mph. The storm is forecast to turn toward the north by early Friday.

On the forecast track, the core of the hurricane will continue to move over the northwestern Bahamas today, and pass well offshore of the East Coast of Central and North Florida tonight and early Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are 115 mph, with higher gusts. Irene is a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. Some strengthening is expected today and tonight.

Irene is a large tropical cyclone. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 255 miles.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 951 mb, or 28.08 inches.

Hurricane Irene getting stronger, puts East Coast on alert

MIAMI --
Hurricane Irene is growing in intensity as it continues to slog through the eastern Caribbean with sustained winds at 100 mph. As it becomes bigger and stronger – expected to reach Category 4 status in two days – the danger to Florida, particularly the Tampa Bay area, is dropping.

The National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. advisory today noted little change in the trajectory, which continues to steer the storm east of Florida, taking tenuous aim at the coastline stretching from South Carolina to Virginia.

The advisory said the storm was heading west-northwest at 12 mph. That movement was expected to continue through tonight, followed by a turn to the northwest Wednesday.

Most of Florida, including all of the Tampa Bay area, no longer is in the familiar forecast cone that predicts where a storm will go.

The forecast "has taken almost all of the Bay area out of the 'cone of uncertainty,' " News Channel 8 meteorologist Leigh Spann said. "Of course, the track could still shift back, but all of the models now take the storm at least into South and North Carolina coasts. Some even take it east of North Carolina and farther up the East Coast.

Officials could begin issuing watches for parts of the U.S. mainland later in the day. Despite the path, Florida could begin feeling some effects from Irene late Wednesday because the storm is so large.

The rapidly intensifying Irene cut a destructive path through the Caribbean and is the first hurricane to seriously threaten the United States in almost three years, a worry for some emergency management officials who hope people haven't become complacent about the dangers.

Forecasters said the hurricane could grow to a monstrous Category 4 storm with winds of more than 131 mph before it's predicted to come ashore this weekend on the U.S. mainland. The U.S. National Hurricane Center expected Irene to reach Category 3 strength by Wednesday, if not earlier.

Hurricane center director Bill Read said today that satellite data shows the storm continues to gain organization and, by Wednesday morning, will be a major hurricane. The storm is predicted to hit the Bahamas on Wednesday, moving into the Gulf Stream and then heading north, he said.

It's too early to predict where the storm will make landfall, Read said. Its current trajectory brings it on shore anywhere from South Carolina to Virginia's Chesapeake Bay.

"Suffice it to say," Read said, "it's a very large storm to begin with, and it has tropical storm winds out 200 miles from its center. We are going to have very large tropical cyclone traveling up the Eastern Seaboard over the next few days."

Landfall could happen by Saturday, he said, though the effects of the storm, including high winds and high surf will be felt on Friday, Read said.

"Impacts could be widespread, depending on where center of the storm goes," he said.

Current government models have the storm's outer bands sweeping Florida late this week before it takes aim at the mid-Atlantic coastline this weekend, though forecasters caution that predictions made days in advance can be off by hundreds of miles. Georgia also is likely to be affected.

The last hurricane to make landfall in the United States was Ike, which pounded Texas in 2008.

"For residents in states that may be affected later this week, it's critical that you take this storm seriously," said Craig Fugate, administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Fugate said that the storm could have an effect on all the states along the Eastern Seaboard from Florida to New England. Conditions likely will include heavy rain, blustery winds and coastal flooding, at the very least, along many states hundreds of miles from the eye of the storm.

"People tend to look at the forecast for guidance," he said, "They say, 'If not inside the cone, it's not a problem.' But there are hazardous marine and beach conditions (outside the cone). Swells will bring surfers out resulting in the dangerous combination of people who are not good swimmers and treacherous surf conditions."

Emergency officials in North Carolina were checking "pre-landfall operations" to make sure equipment such as trucks, forklifts, generators and computers were working, said Ernie Seneca, spokesman for the state Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. They also were taking inventory of food and water supplies.

To the south in Miami, Julio Gonzalez was heeding the warnings and headed to a hardware store to pick up what he needed to protect his home.

"I'm gonna board up," he said Monday. "It's best to play it safe."

Others were stocking up on bottled water and plywood. And "Hurricane Irene" was trending on Twitter, with many users sharing updates on the storm's progress while others hoped it wouldn't come their way.

"We want to make sure Floridians are paying attention," said Bryan Koon, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, who met Monday with the governor. "We are at the height of the hurricane season right now. If it's not Hurricane Irene, it could be the follow-up storm that impacts us."

After several extremely active years, Florida has not been struck by a hurricane since Wilma raked across the state's south in October 2005. That storm was responsible for at least five deaths in the state and came two months after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

Irene slashed directly across Puerto Rico, tearing up trees and knocking out power to more than a million people. It then headed out to sea, north of the Dominican Republic, where the powerful storm's outer bands were buffeting the north coast with dangerous sea surge and downpours. President Barack Obama declared an emergency for Puerto Rico, making it eligible for federal help.

At least hundreds were displaced by flooding in the Dominican Republic, forced to take refuge in churches, schools or relatives' homes. Electricity also was cut in some areas.

"Everything filled with water, there was just water everywhere," said Maria Altagracia Fernandez, who spent Monday night sleeping on the floor with her five children and about 100 other people at a shelter in the fishing town of Boba, 135 miles northeast of Santo Domingo.

Irene was forecast to pass over or near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas by tonight and be near the central Bahamas early Wednesday.

In the U.K. territory of the Turks and Caicos, a steady stream of customers bought plywood and nails at hardware stores, while others readied storm shutters and emergency kits at home.

"I can tell you I don't want this storm to come. It looks like it could get bad, so I've definitely got to get my boats out of the water," said Dedrick Handfield at the North Caicos hardware store where he works.

In South Carolina, emergency agencies went on alert for what could be the first hurricane to hit there in seven years.

"This is potentially a very serious hurricane," longtime Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. said. He led Charleston's recovery from the massive destruction of Hurricane Hugo's 135 mph winds and waves back in 1989.

Irene could bring much-needed relief to a fire blazing in the Great Dismal Swamp on the North Carolina-Virginia line, however. If the storm stays on its current track, it could soak the smoldering fire that's consumed more than 9 square miles of swamp in both states.

Across Florida, emergency management agencies were closely monitoring Irene's movements and track. They urged residents to make sure they have batteries, drinking water, food and other supplies available in case Irene takes aim at the state.

"We must prepare for the worst and hope for the best," said Joe Martinez, chairman of the Miami-Dade County Commission.

'Four-Star floating Palace' Off Clearwater Will Cater to Anglers

Just beyond the western horizon off Clearwater beach bobs a floating palace; a luxurious hotel and elegant restaurant.

When it opens on Sept. 9, massages will be available in the spa; exercise machines will be available inside a gym and movies will be shown in the theater. Docked alongside will be five fishing and diving boats, between 28 feet and 37 feet long that take guests to prime diving or fishing spots.

It's a Fisherman's Paradise. In fact, that's the name of the place.

The 385-foot-long, 85-foot-wide barge is taking reservations, though its opening weekend already is booked solid.

The website for the business calls it a "four-star floating palace." It has a landing pad for a Sikorsky helicopter that ferries back and forth between the seaport and nearby airports.

Its stay about 15 miles off the coast of Clearwater is not permanent. The plan is to travel around the Gulf of Mexico and western Caribbean in search of fish, reefs and well-to-do travelers.

It has scoped out anchorages south of Louisiana and near Cancun, the Dry Tortugas and along the Gulf shores of Panama, though it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

For the foreseeable future, the barge will bob off the coast of Pinellas, a seafaring haven for anglers and mothership to participating charter captains working from docks along the coast.

Barracudaville charter boat Capt. Mark Maloney is looking forward to the opening of Fisherman's Paradise.

"Sounds like a great idea, from a fishing point of view," he said, "a five-minute boat ride to the middle grounds would be fantastic."

Still, he said with the extra amenities, he believes the fishermen booking rooms on the Fisherman's Paradise will be high-enders.

"I would suspect you would be spending well over a grand per person when it is all said and done," he said. "I tend to believe people will go just because it is unique and then they may have something to talk about."

Charter boat Capt. Frank Bacheler, who fishes out of Hubbard's Marina in Madeira Beach, said he doesn't think the barge will help or hurt his business.

"I don't think it will harm us," he said. "It'll draw people from out of the area; people who will go there specifically for that."

People who fish with Bacheler typically are vacationing in the area and are doing other things. They may spend a day at a theme park or on the beach. People who go to Fisherman's Paradise don't have those options.

"I think it's going to be a getaway for guys who want to get away," Bacheler said.

David Downing, assistant director of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Area Convention and Visitor's Bureau, said the floating hotel is not yet on the bureau's website as a point of interest, but, "It is on our radar in as much as we've read about it in the news."

When tourists or potential convention representatives call, Fisherman's Paradise will be mentioned, he said.

"Anything we can use to promote this area as a destination from other places, we will use," he said. The floating hotel concept is unique, he said.

"It's a differentiator," he said, something this area offers that most other areas don't. "If it's not unique, it is rare."

Room rate packages aboard the floater range from $150 per person per night, designed for fishermen who arrive in their own boats, to the whole shebang of $549 for a night, according to the barge's website.

The floating hotel sleeps 36 and can sit 45 in its dining room.

Christopher Longrie, spokesman for Fisherman's Paradise, said that the barge is booked for its opening weekend, even though there has been no marketing, except for the website.

"We hadn't intended on marketing it until a few weeks after the opening weekend," he said, "so we could get all the kinks worked out."

The floating hotel originally was a transatlantic pipe-laying barge, he said. It was bought by a group of local investors, who also are avid fishermen and divers, who "were always going to the middle grounds and tired of spending a fortune on gas," he said.

Six years ago, they pooled their money and towed the barge to the Dominican Republic where much of the structural work was done. Then, the multimillion dollar barge without engines, was brought back here where local workers put on the luxurious finishing touches, he said.

The barge, which is registered under the Bolivian flag, made the news in December when, in 13-foot seas and high winds, it shook loose from its moorings and drifted to within sight of Indian Rocks Beach.

For four hours the barge drifted, until the four-man crew brought it under control, and tugboats arrived to usher it to a repair yard in the Port of Tampa for inspection and maintenance.

Longrie said that for now, the hotel will be anchored off the Pinellas coast.

"This is where the investors fish," he said. "Ninety miles northwest of Clearwater, the middle grounds is the best grouper and snapper fishing in the world."

Tampa singer plays wild card on 'Talent'!!

A Tampa singer has a shot at national fame on the wild card round of "America's Got Talent" tonight on NBC.

Shevonne Philidor, 20, who has performed at numerous Tampa-area clubs and restaurants, including Whiskey Joe's, is scheduled to perform before the judges.

If she gets enough votes from viewers, she will continue in the competition.

"I am very nervous and very anxious," Philidor said Monday in a telephone interview. "I would love to have a recording contract one day."

Philidor plays guitar, drums and keyboard and writes her own music. She says she can sing all styles from rock to blues. She's posted some of her performances on YouTube. "I'm not a viral hit, but a lot of people have checked them out," she said.

Philidor, the 2008 homecoming queen at Blake High School, is in Los Angeles with her mother, Kim Brown. Several watching parties are planned in Brandon, Tampa, Apollo Beach and Wesley Chapel.

"This is very exciting because Shevonne is incredibly gifted," says Cynthia Gries, founder and director of Tampa's Entertainment Revue, a singing and dancing troupe of young performers.

Gries is hosting a watching party tonight at the Press Box on South Dale Mabry Highway. She says Philidor was a member of the Revue for more than eight years. "She's got a lot of talent, a natural performer," Gries said.

Philidor made her TV debut in 2004 on "America's Most Talented Kids." She since has performed in the national tour of "Oz The Musical."

Philidor tried out twice before for "America's Got Talent" and four times for "American Idol" before landing a spot in front of the judges in Houston in May. She auditioned while a reporter from USA Today was there and was featured in an article about the show.

When she is not performing in Tampa-area clubs, Philidor works a retail job at Abercrombie & Fitch, does voice-over work in commercials and moonlights as a party disc jockey.

Flood Advisory Issued for Southern Hillsborough, Pinellas Counties

The faucet is back on again today.

For the second day in a row, strong thunderstorms are sweeping in off the Gulf of Mexico, packing dangerous lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.

The National Weather Service in Ruskin has issued a flood advisory for southern Hillsborough and southern Pinellas counties. An estimated 2 inches of rain per hour is falling in some of those already-saturated locations. That advisory is in effect until 10:15 a.m.

Earlier, a special weather advisory had been issued for Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, warning of heavy thunderstorms with possible damaging winds of 45 to 55 mph. That advisory since has expired.

After a daylong deluge Tuesday, the rain chance is at 70 percent today.

Some parts of the region were drenched by more than 4 inches of rain, according to radar estimates from the National Weather Service. The heaviest rains fell in northwestern Hillsborough, southwestern Pasco and northeast Pinellas.

At Tampa International Airport, 2.97 inches of rain fell.

An endless series of showers and thunderstorms swept in off the Gulf on Tuesday. The stormy and rainy conditions were triggered by a westerly wind, along with high pressure to the south and low pressure to the north, forecasters said.

After today, the rain chance should drop down into the more normal 30 percent to 40 percent range for the period Thursday through the weekend.

Bonus attraction: You can watch boaters navigate the tricky shoals of Blind Pass. Occasionally, a rookie sailor in a rent-by-the-hour runabout will run aground and turn the episode into maritime performance art. A word of warning: Don't feed the seagulls, lest you get special sauce on your Big Woody half-pound hot dog.

Plan ahead. Budget extra time. There are so many mouth-watering choices, it will take a while for you to decide what delicious food to order from the deli counter at this neighborhood market. First-timers should start with a Cuban sandwich and a devil crab and then go sit outside at the picnic benches on the sidewalk next to the unpicturesque parking lot. One of Interbay's ridiculously large and sloppy burgers is enough for two to share. Once you're done, go back in and shop. You'll feel like you've found a delicious secret.

So what if it's indoors? Sitting at the solid oak picnic tables at Jimbo's screams, "Let's get our eat on." During the week, the homey dining room with license plates and a gator hide on the paneled walls is choked with blue-collar, white-collar and no-collar customers who love the chopped pork, rib plates, hamburgers, smoked beef and sweeter-than-pie servers. Try the free pickle bar near the stairs while you wait for your food. And be sure to order extra fritters. They taste like fried love.

Tropical Storm Emily Less Likely to Affect Florida's West Coast

The more time passes, the more the cone moves to the right.

That's good news for the west coast of Florida, when it comes to the future path of Tropical Storm Emily.

"It looks like it could be a non-event for our coastal counties," said Daniel Noah, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin.

"We're going to have to wait and see what happens after it gets through Haiti," Noah added. "It's going to be more of an east coast problem, and it may not even be that big of a problem for them."

At 11 this morning, a disorganized Emily was about 125 miles south-southeast of the Dominican Republic. With sustained winds of 50 mph, it was moving west at 14 mph.

The tropical storm is expected to dump heavy rain on Haiti, which still is struggling to recover from the aftermath of a horrific earthquake last year.

Widespread rainfall amounts of 4 to 6 inches, with some locations getting pounded by 10 inches, are possible, said Dennis Feltgen, spokesman for the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

"Tens of thousands of people are still living in tents and under tarps," Feltgen said. "That's just not a good situation. It adds to the misery."

Forecasters expect the storm to take a more northward turn before it gets to Florida.

"The forecast still has the curve," Feltgen said. "How close it comes to the coastline is still open for debate."

Some models, however, try to take the storm below Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico. A couple of them even bring it up the west coast of Florida.

In the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more than 630,000 people are still without shelter after last year's earthquake.

A "steady shield of rain" should reach the island of Hispaniola shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti around noon today, and the rainfall should worsen by late afternoon, said John Dlugoenski, senior meteorologist with Accuweather.com.

"The biggest threat to lives is probably the flooding," Dlugoenski said.

Civil defense officials and the military in the Dominican Republic have already begun moving people out of high-risk zones ahead of the storm. Haitian authorities urged people to conserve food and safeguard their belongings.

In Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince, Jislaine Jean-Julien, a 37-year-old street merchant displaced by the January 2010 earthquake, said she was praying the storm would pass her flimsy tent without knocking it over.

"For now, God is the only savior for me," Jean-Julien said at the edge of a crowded encampment facing the quake-destroyed National Palace. "I would go some place else if I could but I have no place else to go."

Haitian emergency authorities set aside a fleet of 22 large white buses in the event they needed to evacuate people from flooded areas. Emergency workers would then bus the people to dozens of schools, churches and other buildings that will serve as shelters.

"We're working day and night to be able to respond quickly in case we have any disasters," said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, director of Haiti's Civil Protection Agency.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain could fall in some parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides in areas of mountainoust terrain.

Emergency workers, both Haitian and foreign, also sent out text messages to cell phone users, alerting them to the approaching storm and to take precautions such as staying with friends or relatives if that were an option.

Such advisories are not uncommon but few in Haiti have the means to heed them because of the crushing poverty.

"This is not the first time we've heard these messages," said Alexis Boucher, a 29-year-old man who lives in Place Boyer, a public square that became a camp after the earthquake. "We receive these messages and yet we still don't have anywhere to go."

A slow-moving storm that triggered mudslides and floods in Haiti killed at least 28 people in June.

The United Nations peacekeeping force in Haiti notified its 11,500 troops to be on standby in case they need to respond, said Sylvie Van Den Wildenberg, a spokeswoman for the U.N. peacekeeping mission. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies also, put emergency teams on standby, which have access to relief supplies already in place for up to 125,000 people in seaside towns throughout the country.

In the Dominican Republic's southern tourist districts, workers at hotels and restaurants gathered up umbrellas, tables, chairs, and anything else that might be blown away.

Capt. Frank Castillo, dock master of the Marina Casa de Campo in the southeastern tourist city of La Romana, and his crew helped boat owners secure their vessels in slips or pull them ashore.

In Puerto Rico, there were no reports of major damage or injuries and no immediate demand for the nearly 400 schools that were converted into emergency shelters around the island.

Gov. Luis Fortuno had declared a state of emergency and most government offices were closed. Ahead of the storm, people cleared water and other emergency supplies from store shelves and tourists fled the small Puerto Rican islands of Culebra and Vieques.

But most of the island saw no more than sporadic gusts and showers.

Tropical Storm Emily May Affect Florida by Weekend

Tropical Strom Emily formed southeast of Puerto Rico on Monday, and it could be affecting Florida by the weekend, according to a statement from the National Weather Service in Ruskin.

The statement says the forecast track could put it near South Florida on Saturday.

"If you have weekend plans, they might get disrupted," said Daniel Noah, warning coordination meteorologist with the Weather Service.

Monday evening, Tropical Storm Emily was about 350 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and had sustained winds of 40 mph. It was moving to the west at 17 mph.

News Channel 8 chief meteorologist Steve Jerve said the storm was relatively weak.

Still, it is important to monitor and remain aware of Tropical Storm Emily, Jerve said.

"It's something we should watch this week," Jerve said. "This is the time of year that you are extra aware, and you should review your family plan if you haven't already."

The storm brought strong winds and heavy rain Monday to the Lesser Antilles, said Dennis Feltgen, spokesman for the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The Weather Service said a tropical storm warning had been issued for Puerto Rico and the islands of Vieques and Culebra. France issued a tropical storm warning for the islands of Guadeloupe, Desirade, Les Saintes and Marie Galante. The government of Barbados issued a tropical storm warning for St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat and Antigua.

Tropical storm watches were in effect for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Haiti.

As the calendar turns to August, the hurricane season typically heats up.

Aug. 10 is, on average, the date the first hurricane forms, said a hurricane center spokesman.

The season already has been busier than usual.

The fifth named storm doesn't typically form until Aug. 31, meaning Tropical Storm Emily is about four weeks ahead of schedule.

Head Over the Rainbow This Weekend to Sing Along 'Oz'

TAMPA - Singing show tunes while watching a movie could get you kicked out of a theate – unless you're at Tampa Theatre this weekend for its Sing-Along "Wizard of Oz."

Here, no one will stare you down if you belt out "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" or "If I Only Had a Brain." In fact, it's encouraged.

Lyrics streaming across the screen allow patrons to sing their hearts out. They're also invited to dress in a costume inspired by the movie.

The "Wizard of Oz" sing along is one of Tampa Theatre's most popular events.

"The phone rings off the hook this time of year," says Tara Schroeder, director of marketing for the historic movie house. "Everybody loves the sing alongs."

And fans really get into the costumes.

Not only do attendees dress like Dorothy and the Scarecrow. One year, a group of Oz fans covered themselves with batting and attached miniature cows, horses and bicycles to look like a tornado, says Schroeder.

One grandmother and granddaughter donned matching ruby red slippers.

Fans can follow the yellow brick road across the stage as part of the Audience Costume Parade, while a photographer snaps their picture. The photos will be available on the theater website for purchase after the show, with proceeds going to support the theater's artistic educational programs.

Based on the 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, the 1939 classic follows the adventures of Dorothy and her dog, Toto, as they are whisked from Kansas by a tornado to the land of Oz.

With help from new friends, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, she treks down the yellow brick road to the Emerald City while being pursued by the Wicked Witch of the West.

"The Wizard of Oz" is 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 711 N. Franklin St.; doors will open at 2 p.m. Tickets are $9; $7 for theater members and can be purchased in advance at the Tampa Theatre box office.

Heat Wave Harmful for Pets, Too

About this time last year, I heard a story about a dog that passed away after succumbing to heatstroke.

The saddest part is that it didn't have to happen. The dog's caretaker took him jogging on Bayshore Boulevard in the middle of the day. The dog later collapsed and was rushed to the veterinary hospital in bad condition. It could not be saved.

It's hotter out there for our canine and feline companions than we think.

Common causes of heatstroke in pets include overexertion, being left in an unattended automobile, or being left outside without water on a hot and sunny summer day.

But even simple activities such as direct sun exposure or leisurely walking can cause a medical crisis. "A dog may be susceptible to heatstroke under conditions that may not seem uncomfortable, much less life-threatening, to humans," points out veterinarian Eddie Garcia, clinic director at Veterinary Medical Clinic in South Tampa.

He says heatstroke occurs when a dog's body absorbs more heat than it can dissipate, either through exercise or exposure.

Dogs and cats only have sweat glands in their noses and the pads of feet. Very little cooling takes place with these minimal evaporating surfaces, so they rely on panting too cool down. Panting allows air to move through the nasal passages, which picks up excess heat from the body. As it is expelled through the mouth, the extra heat leaves with it. Although it is an efficient means of controlling body heat, it is severely limited in areas of high humidity or when the animal is in close quarters.

Very young or elderly pets will have a more difficult time regulating body temperature. Overweight pets are also at greater risk of heatstroke, because their extra layers of fat act as insulation, trapping heat and restricting their breathing.

Cats are less likely to suffer heatstroke because people don't typically walk or jog with their cats. And outdoor felines are pretty smart about seeking out cool, shady areas. "If a cat suffers from heat exhaustion, it is usually a case where the cat was trapped in a hot area from which it could not escape", Garcia says.

Garcia says dogs with small heads and short noses are more susceptible to heatstroke. Pugs, Pekingese, boxers, Boston terriers and bulldogs are poorly built for cooling because their short noses cannot exchange air as effectively as longer-nosed dogs.

Take these precautions:

Limit activity and keep pets at a healthy weight. Walk at a gentle pace, and if your pet seems tired, rest a bit or stop the activity. Limit longer walks to early morning or evenings when the sun isn't so direct and temperatures are more comfortable.
Never leave your pet or child in the car! Not only is it against the law, but it's very dangerous. The sun can raise the temperature inside your car to 120 degrees or higher in a matter of minutes, even with the windows down.
Keep pets inside on hot days. Even if your yard has shady areas, those spots can shift throughout the day.
Whether inside or out, be sure your pet has clean cool water to drink at all times. Check the bowl several times a day and keep it filled. If you go for a walk or an outing with your pet, take plenty of water along.
Keep pets well-groomed. This helps their fur do what it is intended to do: protect from sun and insulate from heat. If the coat is matted and tangled, the fur may actually trap heat.

Rapid or excessive panting
Bright red or purple tongue
Red or pale gums
Glazed eyes or staring
Anxious or restless
Depression or weakness
Confusion
Trouble standing or walking
Collapse
Vomiting
Diarrhea

If you suspect your pet has heatstroke, you must act quickly and calmly. Immediately get indoors or into a shady area. Lower the animal's body temperature by applying towels soaked in cool water to the hairless areas of the body. Offer small amounts of cool water. Get your pet to your veterinarian. Once in the vet's care, treatment may include further cooling techniques, fluids and medication.

Heatstroke may prove fatal even with emergency treatment, so take precautions to avoid potential perils during the dog days of summer.

"The thing about dog waste is that it's the only bacteria source that people willingly leave on the ground," Janet Geer, spokesperson for a partnership of regional governments dedicated to improving local water quality, told The Huffington Post. "For some reason it doesn't sink in that it is raw sewage."

While Geer acknowledged the power of poop "to bring out the 6-year-old in a lot of people," she also emphasized the seriousness of the issue.

It's not just a stinky situation -- skipping scooping poses a public health hazard.

For one, pet feces carry bacteria, viruses and parasites into waterways that can cause unpleasant infections such as giardia and E. coli. More indirectly, the excrement also releases nutrients into the water that can feed algae, kill marine life, contaminate beaches and send unlucky swimmers home with bouts of diarrhea or hives.

As Luther states simply in the song: "Hey yo, you don't want to swim in poo."

The Puget Sound area is home to over a million dogs, which the campaign estimates generate as much waste as about 300,000 people. And just like their owners, the dogs' are contributing to one of the region's major concerns: the pollution of the Puget Sound.

What's more, the Associated Press reported Monday, "too much pollution from animal and human waste has been washing into Samish Bay in north Puget Sound, prohibiting shellfish harvests 38 days already this year."

The problem isn't limited to the Pacific Northwest, or even the people who eat the Pacific Northwest's prized seafood. The U.S. pet dog population reached a record 78.2 million in 2010, the Wall Street Journal reported. The high number of pets is particularly noticeable in high density cities.

Along Stratford Avenue in the Bronx borough of New York City, for example, residents have to be careful where they walk.

"There's always dog poop everywhere," Bronx resident Migdalia Cordero told News Channel 12 last week. The current $250 fine for failure to pick up waste is having little impact, as enforcement requires a perpetrator to be caught in the act.

Jefferson County, Colo., recently unleashed a team of volunteers to approach and remind dog owners that "there is no poop fairy," after an imposed $30 fine alone wasn't doing the trick, according to the Denver Post.

"Unlike wild-animal feces, dog poop does not biodegrade quickly," the Post reported last week.

Meanwhile, one landlord in New Hampshire is going a step further in her effort to avoid stepping in doo-doo: mandatory DNA testing of all dogs that live in her apartment complex. If abandoned waste is found, she enlists a program called PooPrints to match samples with the dog database, CNN reported.

Leaving a pet's droppings on the sidewalk or in a park is not a crime in every municipality, but the environmental risk likely sits outside the law anyway -- hiding in people's backyards or other private property.

When it rains in Seattle, feces left in any of these places can wash into storm drains and ditches, which then flow untreated to the nearest lake, stream or wetland and ultimately wind up in the Puget Sound.

"Pet waste is one of the primary sources of bacterial contamination in our local streams," Geer said. "It's in almost all the water samples we've tested."

Of course, once you do scoop the poop, there remains the question of what to do with it.

Composting or flushing the waste down the toilet in biodegradable bags are options that have garnered recent attention. However, according to Geer, these strategies are not yet ready for wide adoption; compost generally doesn't get hot enough to kill pathogens and flushable bags don't necessarily break down and could result in clogged pipes.

Simply picking it up and putting it in the trash is the best way to go, she said.

Shake, Rattle and Rock With Elvis Festival

TAMPA - They'll be all shook up with burning love Saturday at the ninth annual Tampa Elvis Festival where a bevy of Elvis tribute artists will perform.

Vendors selling food and Elvis memorabilia will be there as well as members of the Tampa Elvis TBC (Taking Care of Business) Fan Club, sponsors of the event.

As many as 14 Elvis tribute artists will compete in a daylong sing-off for the 2011 title of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist in Tampa.

The contest is sanctioned by Elvis Presley Enterprises, and the winner can compete in the Ultimate Elvis contest in Memphis in August (as part of the annual commemoration of Presley's death in 1977).

The Tampa festival starts at 10 a.m. in the All Peoples Live Center (a recreation center) at 6105 E. Sligh Ave.

"People from all over Florida are coming," says Vickie L. May, president of the Tampa Elvis Fan Club. "Last year, we had 400, and we expect 600 or more this year."

She added, "We will have more vendors and our biggest silent auction."

The first round of competition starts at 11 a.m. with amateur Elvis artists performing. Two more rounds featuring professional Elvis performers continue in the afternoon and evening. Just before the winner is crowned at about 9 p.m. the "Elvi" will join in singing "Memories."

During the afternoon competition, two "junior Elvis artists" will perform and there will be a special presentation of Elvis artist Ted Torres "Elvis at the Movies" act. Orlando-based Torres has won dozens of Elvis tribute contests and has won the Tampa contest twice.

The festival started eight years ago as a city of Tampa event to commemorate Presley's ties to Tampa, including his four performances at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory in 1955 and 1956. Also, Presley's fabled manager Col. Tom Parker lived in Tampa in the 1940s and was a part-time dog catcher here before he started booking country music acts.

When the city of Tampa dropped the festival because of budget cutbacks, the Tampa fan club took over to keep it going.

Storms may wash out last space shuttle launch on Friday

NASA's last space shuttle countdown is under way, but lousy weather may delay Friday's launch attempt.

There's a 60 percent chance that rain or thunderstorms will postpone the liftoff of Atlantis, shuttle weather officer Kathy Winters said today. The weather improves with each passing day, as the launch time gets slightly earlier.

Friday's launch time is 11:26 a.m.

The countdown clocks started ticking this afternoon. The four astronauts assigned to the 12-day flight arrived at Kennedy Space Center on Monday.

Atlantis is making one final supply run to the International Space Station before retiring. As many as 1 million spectators are expected to jam the Cape Canaveral area for the historic send-off.

NASA test director Jeremy Graeber said the launch team is doing its best to put off any emotions associated with the end of the 30-year shuttle era, until Atlantis flies.

"The team gets into the mode of this-is-launch-countdown, and that's really the focus that everybody has," Graeber told journalists. "The rest of the emotion that really comes with the end of the space shuttle program, I think will really kind of roll in as launch is completed."

Graeber, for one, can't wait to take his seat in Launch Control. "It's a really cool job … and to get to do it one more time is a great feeling," he said.

Atlantis is loaded with thousands of pounds of food, clothes, experiments and other supplies for the orbiting complex. NASA wants to stockpile a year's worth of provisions in case commercially sponsored cargo ships get delayed. The first such launch is targeted for later this year.

NASA is under orders to get out of the Earth-to-orbit business and focus instead on trips to true outer space: an asteroid and Mars.

This will be the 135th flight for the shuttle program and the 33rd for Atlantis, the last shuttle to be retired. Discovery was first in March, followed by Endeavour at the beginning of June. Each shuttle will head to a museum.

NASA said it must launch Atlantis by Sunday — choosing the best two out of three days — otherwise it will have to wait until at least July 16. That's because of an unmanned rocket due to lift off next week.

If the crowds are as huge as anticipated, NASA said it will try Friday and then probably wait until Sunday to give launch controllers enough time to deal with the heavy traffic and get some rest.

Yoga Retreats Offer Healthy Indulgence

Endless margaritas, fried food at every meal and a week's worth of late-night partying can make you wish for a vacation from your vacation.

Or maybe you just need a different kind of indulgent escape to start with.

"The whole purpose is that people can unplug and really get in touch with themselves," says clinical psychologist and mindful eating expert Diego Hernandez, who in July will accompany Tampa yoga teachers Dale Morphew and Shelly Happel to Pura Vida Spa Resort in Costa Rica, where they'll help folks recharge with daily meditation, yoga classes and outdoor adventures.

Hernandez will teach meditation and mindfulness techniques to help people soak up their experiences.

Tampa-based yogi Jen Smith took her love of workshops and retreats and turned it into a members-only discount website called retreatyourselfwell.com.

The History of Father's Day

History
Father's Day is a celebration of fathers inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities.

The first observance of Father's Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907. It's possible that Clayton was influenced by the first celebration of Mother's Day that same year, just a few miles away. Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her recently deceased father.

Unfortunately, the day was overshadowed by other events in the city, West Virginia did not officially register the holiday, and it was not celebrated again. All the credit for Father's Day went to Sonora Dodd from Spokane, who invented independently her own celebration of Father's Day just two years later, also influenced by Jarvis' Mother's Day.

Clayton's celebration was forgotten until 1972, when one of the attendants to the celebration saw Nixon's proclamation of Father's Day, and worked to recover its legacy. The celebration is now held every year in the Central United Methodist Church – the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was torn down in 1922. Fairmont is now promoted as the "Home of the First Father's Day Service".

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents" In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men and boys who are not fathers.

Commercialization
The Associated Men's Wear Retailers formed a National Father's Day Committee in New York City in the 1930s, which was renamed in 1938 to National Council for the Promotion of Father's Day and incorporated several other trade groups. This council had the goals of legitimizing the holiday in the mind of the people and managing the holiday as a commercial event in a more systematic way, in order to boost the sales during the holiday. This council always had the support of Dodd, who had no problem with the commercialization of the holiday and endorsed several promotions to increase the amount of gifts. In this aspect she can be considered the opposite of Anna Jarvis, who actively opposed all commercialization of Mother's Day.

The merchants recognized the tendency to parody and satirize the holiday, and used it to their benefit by mocking the holiday on the same advertisements where they promoted the gifts for fathers. People felt compelled to buy gifts even though they saw through the commercial façade, and the custom of giving gifts on that day became progressively more accepted. By 1937 the Father's Day Council calculated that only one father in six had received a present on that day. However, by the 1980s, the Council proclaimed that they had achieved their goal: the one-day event had become a three-week commercial event, a "second Christmas". Its executive director explained back in 1949 that, without the coordinated efforts of the Council and of the groups supporting it, the holiday would have disappeared.

Spelling
Although the name of the event is usually understood as a plural possessive (i.e. "day belonging to fathers"), which would under normal English punctuation guidelines be spelled "Fathers' Day," the most common spelling is "Father's Day," as if it were a singular possessive (i.e. "day belonging to Father"). In the United States, Dodd used the "Fathers' Day" spelling on her original petition for the holiday, but the spelling "Father's Day" was already used in 1913 when a bill was introduced to the U.S. Congress as the first attempt to establish the holiday, and it was still spelled the same way when its creator was commended in 2008 by the U.S. Congress.

This week, we're celebrating Dad. June 19 is Father's Day, and every year we seem to fret over what to get the man who seems to have everything - from a chest full of tools to a closet full of ties.

This year, we offer up ideas of what to do with him, and not what to buy for him. Because, after all, what better way to create a lasting memory than to experience the joy of celebrating together? So ditch the wrapping paper and treat him to an outing that will show how much you appreciate all that he's done.

Florida State League game: If dad is a baseball fan but a Rays game is out of your price range (they play the Marlins at the Trop at 1:40 p.m. Sunday), treat him to a Florida State League game instead. The beer is just as cold, but at a fraction of the price. Father's Day coincides with the FSL's All-Star Weekend at Bright House Field in Clearwater. Popi's Wants You To Be A Regular

You can bet, after just one visit, someone will be trying to remember your name.

We had the pleasure of getting the same server twice, and she not only remembered us, but she also remembered what we had ordered during our previous visit a week before.

On both visits, a Saturday and a Monday, the place was packed.

On our first visit, we went for lunch but were torn between breakfast food and the regular menu. Popi's serves breakfast fare until 3 p.m. and the smell of bacon and pancakes was tempting.

We started with the spinach dip and chips. The chips needed a bit more salt but the dip was creamy and a good start to the meal.

As we munched, we saw patrons at table after table opt for breakfast. We chose a Greek Omelet, stuffed with feta cheese, green peppers, tomatoes, onions and sausage. The feta, instead of traditional American cheese, was a nice change. The omelet reminded us of what Grandma would make. It came with home fries, which were a little too golden.

To top it off, we ordered a cup of coffee, which the server kept full and piping hot.

The little one among us ordered a Mickey Mouse pancake off of the kid's menu. It also came with home fries, and these were cooked to perfection. The pancake, shaped like Mickey's head, was a big hit and the kiddo enjoyed eating it — ears first.

We also chose Sarah's BBQ Ranch Chicken Salad. It came with chopped grilled chicken breast, crumbled bacon, corn, tortilla strips, tomatoes and cheddar jack cheese. The flavor combinations were pleasing but the salad, overall, was unremarkable.

For our next visit, we stuck with dinner. Our server highly recommended the baked spaghetti, and we were glad we took her advice. The huge plate of spaghetti was served with homemade sauce and covered in mozzarella. It was perfectly baked and so large that half went home for the next day's lunch. We ordered a small Greek salad which wasn't short on tomatoes, cucumbers and olives. It came with a generous amount of feta cheese and Popi's Greek dressing.

We also tried the Chicken tenders and French fires. The plump tenders were golden and fried to perfection.

Popi's menu has plenty to offer. There are Italian entrees, such as eggplant Parmesan and chicken Alfredo. Our server said the liver and onions are a big draw. There's also grilled mahi mahi, grouper and sirloin steak. The chef offers nightly specials, too.

Service was excellent on both visits. Our server was friendly and had plenty of suggestions.

We found the restaurant to be a real kid-pleaser, complete with coloring pages and a cup full of crayons. The kids' menu is varied with a hot dog, hamburger, spaghetti, fish fingers and more. Each comes with a drink and, at $5.99, is a good value.

There is one hiccup, though, with the children's menu: It's only available in the dining room. A colleague recently dined in and ordered a kid's meal to take home, but the server said no, so they had to get a kid-sized meal elsewhere.

All in all, though, we found Popi's a friendly place, offering home-cooked food at a good value.

Dear Valued Residents,

Recently within our apartment portfolio we have experienced two stove grease fires that occurred when a resident was cooking. In both incidents neither renter had “RENTERS INSURANCE”. In one situation the fire itself caused minor damage however, the water from the sprinkler system and Fire Department caused severe damage to the resident’s apartment as well as the neighbors below. The cost for repair, cleaning, and replacement of furnishings exceeded $5,000. In the other incident the staff arrived on the scene and was able to put the fire out in time to keep the sprinkler system from flooding their apartment and the apartments below! The cost for the damage to the apartment stove, cabinets and cleaning up of smoke damage still exceeded $5000.

In the past two months we have experienced forest fires near some of our apartment communities. Fortunately the quick action of the local fire departments kept the fire from spreading into the apartment communities. This could have been catastrophic loss for hundreds of residents. With no renters insurance your personal belongings would not be covered by the apartment community’s property insurance.

To those of you who reside in any of our coastal communities, hurricane season is beginning in June just weeks away. Storm damage is probable in the wake of a hurricane. Damage to your personal items from any type of storm is not covered under the apartment community’s property insurance. Many of you have seen the recent devastation in North Carolina and Georgia from tornado activity. If your building is damaged or destroyed you are not covered for your personal belongings.

What you need to know is that YOU are personally liable for damages to the apartment community as well as damage to units surrounding you even if the Fire Department creates the damage with their equipment and water! As you can see by the picture, there is a car in the parking area next to an apartment building and had this fire gotten out of control several people could have lost everything. Protect yourself! We couldn't aptly honor the illest, most stomach-churning thrill rides without extending our scope 75 miles or so. While abdominal masochists can certainly pummel their digestive tracts on Busch Gardens' myriad coasters and that ship that swings low, bittersweet chariot, Orlando's theme park supercenter has a fleet of teeth-clenching contenders, too.

SheiKra at Busch Gardens: The long queue climbing up to the coaster's lofty loading dock has nothing on the four longer seconds spent suspended over the first drop. Your feet dangling over the yawning chasm of space sprawling below, you'll be hailing Mary or a mental cab to take yourself far, far away from the impending plunge. You'll survive, then likely rush back in line for the front row.

Doctor Doom's Fearfall at Universal's Islands of Adventure: Screams — of delight, surely? — greet parkgoers as they pass the writhing specks of humanity catapulting up and down the ride's twin towers. Sixteen poor, unsuspecting souls are strapped around the base of each 200-foot-tall spire before shooting up and down the diabolical contraption. Careen up with a thrust greater than a 747 engine — say, "Oh, hi, Orlando cityscape!" — then plummet down faster than the force of gravity in an experience that robs the phrase "view from the top" of its innocence.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal's Islands of Adventure: This is one of the best — maybe the best — motion-simulation rides in all the Central Florida amusement parks. The ride, which opened in June 2010, provides seamless transitions between moving images that simulate flying, and constructed sets that feature a dragon, giant spiders, the Whomping Willow and hordes of soul-sucking Dementors. An added plus, especially for kids: The line snakes through Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, including Albus Dumbledore's office and the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.

Rock 'N' Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios: You can't beat fast cars and rock 'n' roll, and the attraction's back story is almost as fun as the ride itself. Visitors touring a recording studio are greeted by Aerosmith as the band finishes a practice session before rushing out to perform a concert. Steven Tyler, though, takes care of his fans by having his manager arrange for some cars to get them to the show as their guests. The limo ride simulates a frantic, nighttime drive on the highway — blaring Aerosmith music, street signs and quick turns — and begins with squealing tires that propel the car from zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds. Think Space Mountain, but faster, louder and even more exciting.

Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom: A twist on the regular coaster experience, this one's a big surprise for first-time riders. The rollercoaster starts calmly enough, but the ride stops abruptly where a fierce Yeti has torn up the tracks. Suddenly, you're hurtling backward — in the dark. Part of the fun is how the train constantly switches tracks, sending you in unexpected directions.

Stylish Diner Builds a Better Burger

Carmelized peppers? Red Onion jam? Chipotle-jalapeño sauce? Pickled cucumbers? Black olive aioli?

Oh, hamburger. It's like we don't even know you anymore.

In recent years, this once-humble staple of American appetites has been fetishized by celebrity chefs in yet another attempt to elevate classic comfort food with gourmet ingredients. Hubert Keller, Daniel Boulud, Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse are just a few of the big names now sticking their spatulas in the boutique burger biz.

Cafe Ponte's Chris Ponte is about as close as the Tampa Bay area gets to a culinary superstar, with his 9-year-old restaurant regularly ranked among the area's finest. Little wonder, then, that the folks behind The Melting Pot and GrillSmith sought his help when creating the menu for their "chef-inspired" burger concept.

To their credit, Ponte and the Burger 21 team clearly understand that a great burger is more than an ordinary burger with a layer of foie gras or a lobster tail slapped on top.

It's about the beef, and Burger 21's — fresh, never frozen USDA choice that's blended especially for the restaurant and probably a good deal fattier than what you usually buy in the store — is as flavorful as you'll find, regardless of which arguably unnecessary toppings you choose.

About those toppings: The menu features 10 custom beef burger combinations ranging from a basic Bacon Cheesy to a spicy Tex-Mex Haystack with guacamole and crispy onion strings, plus 10 non-beef burgers, including a Greek vegetarian patty along with non-traditional takes on a Shrimp Po'Boy and Chicken Parmesan.

The 21st burger on the menu is a special that changes on the 21st of each month. (Get it?) Sliders, hot dogs and salads round out the refreshingly simple, just-the-basics menu.

You order at a counter and they bring the food to your table when it's ready. Service on our visits was remarkably quick, even with a full dining room. We leapt when a booth opened up, and the only person to beat us there was an employee with a towel to clean it off.

The short wait left us just enough time to peruse the sauce bar, which features an inventive variety of condiments, including Thai ketchup, mango-scotch bonnet ketchup, honeycomb mustard, chipotle mayo and toasted marshmallow fluff or apple cider sauce for your sweet potato fries.

We were impressed with our Cheesy Burger, which was consistently juicy without being greasy and came served on a delicious, buttery brioche bun. We also enjoyed the BBQ Bacon Burger, topped with cheddar, crispy onion strings, applewood-smoked bacon and a smoky-sweet hickory barbecue sauce that complemented the flavor of the beef patty rather than obscuring it.

The spicy Ahi Tuna burger was a glorious mess, its lightly fried panko-crusted, sushi-grade patty cooked to a perfect pink and topped with fresh avocado and pickled cucumbers. We needed extra napkins for the vegetarian Black Bean Burger, too, but loved its sweet flavor and melodious mix of accoutrements, including salsa, avocado and sun-dried tomato aioli.

Our only so-so experience was the Mediterranean, a ground chicken patty that was mostly memorable for its tangy feta and black olive aioli toppings. Good, but not great.

The fries, on the other hand, made from Idaho potatoes with a shoestring cut, were downright irresistible. They're lightly seasoned, ideally textured and served still-hot but virtually greaseless, which is no small feat.

Befitting the restaurant's sleek, stylish retro-diner vibe, an old-school soda fountain-style bar serves up shakes and floats that are essential components of any visit to Burger 21. We liked the Key Lime Pie shake, but can't in good conscience recommend anything — and we do mean anything — ahead of the Chocolate Peanut Butter version. It's worth the drive to Westchase all by itself.

With a second location already planned for Carrollwood, Burger 21 seems to have hit on a winning formula — and they did it without resorting to ubiquitous gimmicks like Kobe beef or truffle toppings, not to mention the outrageous prices that go along with them. Then again, this is Westchase, not San Francisco. We may not have celebrity chefs in Tampa, but we still know a good burger when we bite into one.

This week, we're all about satisfying veg heads and the omnivores who dine with them. Many Bay area restaurants are now serving tasty vegetarian fare to sate even a customarily carnivorous appetite.

Practicing (and lapsed) vegetarians can seek edible refuge at a growing handful of establishments that cater strictly to the cruelty-free crowd. Still more boast menus that can simultaneously please the whole family, from the medium-rare mama to her home-from-college vegan.

Whether you fill your sandwich with the fruits of the earth or a creature that fed on them, check out some of our favorite local eateries that offer scrumptious meatless meals.

Loving Hut: Set back off Fletcher Avenue's five-lane girth across the street, ironically enough, from the House of Meats, this nondescript-outside, pristine-inside vegan restaurant (pictured at right) is a hidden oasis of undeniably delightful cuisine. Imitation-meat dishes such as the Club Sandwich and the Vegan Ball Spaghetti taste as good in their own right, while flagrantly vegetarian dishes such as the Cheerful Satay make this vegan chain a welcome addition to Tampa.

Café Hey: Cream cheese and avocado sandwiches hot-pressed between Cuban bread, bulbous brown muffins craggy with hunks of fruit and a beverage selection that rivals most coffee houses — and that's just half the menu. If a kale salad or a VLT (vegan bacon, lettuce, tomato) just won't cut it for you or your carnivorous companions, prepare to get rickrolled in the best kind of way with The Ric Ross sandwich's black forest ham and sweet pepper jelly.

Grass Root: If you're into eating vegan, organic, raw or just plain delicious, you're covered at either of the Grass Root's Tampa locations. Local farms' yields constitute the restaurants' selection of thick smoothies and bountiful dishes. While Everybody Loves Ramen has been known to cure the common cold, items such as the Ginger Chick-un and Pad-Thai pass inspection by even the pickiest of palates.

Ceviche Tapas Bar and Restaurant: With four locations in the Bay area, Ceviche has been serving up delicious, authentic Spanish cuisine since opening its doors in 1997. With a vast menu that boasts more than 100 tapas — many of them vegetarian — fresh salads, an extensive wine list and an indulgent dessert selection, carnivores and herbivores can easily find common ground. Especially over a pitcher of sangria.

Nitally's Thai-Mex Cuisine: Nitally's features a scrumptious, mouth-boggling fusion it dubs 'Thai-Mex,' which marries the spicy flavors of two very different culinary cultures to superb effect. A large portion of its menu is vegetarian and the dishes that do feature meat can be made veg or vegan friendly upon request. Hooray tofu! Panang burritos should be an option on every menu.

Listener-supported radio station WMNF, 88.5 FM, devised Tropical Heatwave as a fundraiser in 1982. The first one featured, according to the station's MySpace blog, "seven local bands, silent films, mime, theater groups, clowns, jugglers, a light show and a Carmen Miranda look-alike contest."

Sadly, there is no Carmen Miranda look-alike contest scheduled for this year's Heatwave, the station's 30th.

Those attending will have to fill their time with the music of almost 60 performers – including headliner Cracker – on nine stages.

As always, the Cuban Club and adjoining El Pasaje Plaza will be the hub, but sets also are scheduled at nearby clubs The Orpheum, New World Brewery, Crowbar and Play, which will have outdoor and indoor stages.

Past Heatwaves have featured Bo Diddley, Marcia Ball, Brave Combo, Alejandro Escovedo and Sebadoh.

The sixth Heatwave, in 1987, featured a dream bill of NRBQ and Sun Ra's Arkestra.

"That was the highlight for me" says WMNF special events coordinator Linda Reisinger, who has helped plan every Heatwave since the first.

"I was standing with Joey Spampinato (NRBQ bassist) watching Sun Ra, asking 'Is he taking us to another place?' That was the highlight for me," Reisinger says.

Reisinger deals with the behind the scenes stuff as well, last-minute cancellations being among the most nerve-racking.

The modern Mother's Day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March, April, or May as a day to honor mothers and motherhood.

Historical Antecedents
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood occur throughout the world; many of these have histories that can be traced back to ancient festivals. The modern US-celebration of Mother's Day is not directly related to these.
There is evidence of mother goddess worship in the ancient world, dating back as far as 6.000 BC and many mother goddess shrines could be found in ancient times in Asia minor.

Ancient Greece imported the Mother Goddess cult from Asia Minor, in the form of a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods. It was held around the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor. Originally they identified Cybele with Rhea, the mother of gods. The details were not recorded, and we only know that the goddess was attended by galli.

Ancient Romans appropriated the cult to Cybele/Rhea in order to absorb culturally the Greeks and the habitants of Asia Minor, honoring Cybele in the Hilaria festivals, from the Ides of March (15 March) to 18 March. But the Romans were horrified by the Greek celebrations; they quickly associated the cult to the Roman version of Cybele and they made up their own customs. They also made a separate festival in April dedicated to Magna Deorum Mater Idaea, a version of Cybele that was even further separated from Greek customs. The two goddesses, Cybele and Mater Idaea, were eventually merged into a single entity that was completely Romanized, although they kept using galli.

The festivals of Cybele evolved into the Christian festival of Mothering Sunday, honouring the Virgin Mary and your mother church (the main church of the area) It's now a long standing tradition, part of the liturgical calendar in several Christian denominations, including Anglicans, and in the Catholic calendar it is marked as Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent. Children and young people who were "in service" (servants in richer households) were given a day off on that date so they could visit their families (or, originally, return to their "mother" church). The children would pick wild flowers along the way to place them in the church or to give them to their mothers as gifts. Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into a secular tradition of giving gifts to mothers. This festival survived in the UK and Ireland for longer than in other European countries, and it was repopularised in the 20th Century. Most people are unaware of its historical origins, and regard Mothering Sunday and Mother's Day as the one and same festival.

Ancient romans had a different unrelated holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno; it was intended to favor the fertility of married women. Married women, independently of whether they were mothers or not, made private parties where they prayed for happiness in their marriages and prepared dishes for their female slaves. The husbands gave money and gifts to their wifes and prayed for their pregnancy. It was complemented by the Saturnalia festival, where male slaves were given freedom and wifes gave presents to their husbands. It was celebrated when the harvests were planted

Modern Antecedents
One of the early calls to celebrate a Mother's Day in the United States was the "Mother's Day Proclamation" by Julia Ward Howe. Written in 1870, it was a pacifist reaction to the carnage of the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. The Proclamation was tied to Howe's feminist belief that women had a responsibility to shape their societies at the political level

International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in 28 February 1909, in the US, by which time Anna Jarvis had already begun her national campaign in the US. It is now celebrated in many countries on March 8.

Launch day has arrived for space shuttle Endeavour as NASA prepares for the orbiter's last ever liftoff from the Space Coast

So far, this afternoon's forecast at Launch Pad 39A calls for a 70 percent chance of favorable weather at launch time: 3:47 p.m.

Crews have finished loading 500,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into Endeavour's external fuel tank. The fueling process took just over three hours.

During fueling, NASA reported a pressure issue with the shuttle's Orbit Maneuvering System. Technicians were able to fix the issue by opening a crossfeed valve.

Both left and right fuel tanks were balanced and below pressure limits, and NASA said there were no technical concerns for launch.

The only concern that remains is a chance of low cloud ceilings and high crosswinds at the Shuttle Landing Facility, in case Endeavour has to return for an emergency landing.

The shuttle's six-man crew will head out to the launch pad just before noon.

On its last mission before retirement, Endeavour is headed to the International Space Station to deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a device built to search the universe for dark matter and antimatter.

The mission includes the last ever scheduled spacewalk by a shuttle crew, as no spacewalks are planned for the very last shuttle mission, STS-135, scheduled for June.

Humana to hire 130 employees in Tampa Bay area

Insurance giant Humana keeps adding employees in the Tampa Bay area, announcing today that it will hire an additional 130 people locally in coming months.

Humana said it is expanding its Humana Cares unit, which serves chronically ill insurance customers. The Louisville, Ky.-based company said the employees will be added by July at the Humana Cares national care center, located in the Carillon business park in St. Petersburg.

It will add an additional 47 people in other locations, bringing its new round of hiring to 177 people in all locations. Humana has been expanding its Humana Cares division rapidly over the past couple of years. The division opened in early 2009 and expects to have nearly 1,000 employees by summer, the company said.

Shuttle Launch April 29th

Record crowds by the thousands are expected to turn out Thursday (Feb. 24) to watch NASA's space shuttle Discovery soar to space for the last time.

Luckily, a shuttle launch is such a bright spectacle that anyone on Florida's Space Coast can get a decent view. The shuttle is poised to blast off on Feb. 24 at 4:50 p.m. EST (2150 GMT) to make one last delivery trip to the International Space Station.

Tickets are scarce, but there are still some steps spectators can take to make sure they have a memorable experience watching shuttle Discovery launch.

Official NASA sites

The best launch viewing spot available to the public is on the NASA Causeway, about 6 miles (9.6 km) from the shuttle's Launch Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. NASA sells adult tickets for viewing from the causeway for $59 ($49 for children), which provides an unobstructed view over the Banana River.

However, if you don't already have tickets for the causeway, you're out of luck: Most of the tickets were sold out months ago, when Discovery was initially slated to launch on Nov. 5. Discovery's final mission has been delayed since November due to issues with the shuttle's external fuel tank.

The number of people clamoring for spots on the NASA Causeway, as well as at the visitor center itself and the nearby U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, was so large NASA instituted a new ticket-selling policy for this final launch of Discovery, Farmer said.

People first had to register for a chance to buy tickets to these locations, and then names were randomly selected from the list to purchase the passes.

"We did make a limited number of tickets available to view launch from Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to a select group of people, selected at random, who registered for the opportunity to purchase space shuttle launch viewing tickets," Andrea Farmer, public relations manager at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, told SPACE.com. "We are expecting the same number of people as for the November launch [attempt]."

And even though the launch has been delayed several times, NASA is expecting many of the original ticket holders to be back this week.

"The level of public interest in this launch is quite high," Farmer said. "Through a survey, we found that many of our guests are still planning on attending the launch of space shuttle Discovery this Thursday."

But for those without coveted NASA tickets, fear not! Opportunities abound for good viewing beyond the spaceport. All you need is a car and a good map.

Other options

One of the most popular locations is Space View Park in Titusville, Fla., just across the Indian River from Kennedy Space Center.

"I would definitely say go to Titusville – that's the best view and the closest view you can get without having tickets," said Ben Cooper, a space photographer for NASA and other media outlets. "Anywhere along the river is good."

Space View Park has the added benefit of an audio feed that plays the official NASA countdown, so people gathered at the site can stay updated on the launch status, Cooper said.

Farmer herself said she has watched many a launch from Space View Park before she went to work for NASA. This spot also tends to get the most crowded, though.

"It's definitely going to be mobbed in that spot," Cooper said. "There really isn't any place to go to get away from the crowds."

Other good viewing locations in Titusville include Parrish Park, on the Max Brewer Causeway between Titusville and Kennedy Space Center.

To get a little bit off the (extremely) well-beaten path, viewers can head to Cape Canaveral and Port Canaveral, where cruise ships dock.

Viewing tips

No matter where you choose to camp out, getting there early is a good idea.

Since Discovery is slated to lift off at 4:50 p.m. EST, bet on arriving at your spot in the morning, at least six hours ahead, Cooper said.

Parking is likely to be tight all over Titusville, with landowners near the Indian River tending to rent out parking spots on launch day for a small fee. Bringing snacks and games for the long day is a good idea, as well as blankets and chairs, and – of course – a camera.

No matter where you choose to watch from, the experience should be memorable.

"We want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to see a space shuttle launch," Farmer said. "I hope that whether or not they have a ticket to Kennedy Space Center – please don't miss out on the opportunity. It's just amazing, especially if it's your once-in-a-lifetime experience."

NASA's shuttle Endeavour is currently slated to launch on its final mission to space on April 19, 2011, at 7:48 p.m. EDT (2350 GMT).

NASA has not yet sold tickets for viewing that launch. To be alerted when they open the lottery for the chance to buy passes, sign up here.

A NASA authorization bill signed last year by President Obama approved one more flight by the shuttle Atlantis, though that mission must be allocated funding by Congress before it is officially on. This extra trip is slated to lift off on June 28 at 3:48 p.m. EDT (1948 GMT).

The crowds for viewing either of these launches will likely be some of the largest ever, so it never hurts to plan ahead.

Bay Area Parks

Hillsborough County students are – finally – on Spring Break next week. Sure, you'll have your trips to the beach and maybe a day or two at an amusement park. But sometimes you just want to get out of the house for a while and not spend a lot of money doing it.

Despite having a variety parks in the Bay area, we tend to go to our closest neighborhood one. But a little venture out can lead you to a fun destination the entire family can enjoy.

Here are our top five:

Vinoy Park. If you're looking for a view, this park tops the list. Located on waterfront property, the park overlooks The Pier and downtown St. Petersburg. You can bike along the path to North Shore Park or toward the Pier. The little ones will enjoy playing at the playground or dipping their toes in the bay. It's also within walking distance to several nice outdoor restaurants.

Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. A recent addition to downtown Tampa, this park is a popular weekend destination for families. Located on the banks of the Hillsborough River, it offers a children's playground (kids line up for a turn on the interactive NEOS 360 Ring), dog run and two interactive water fountains. Get a spot under one of the trees near the playground for a picnic lunch or just relax with a book. And don't forget bathing suits for the kids.

Al Lopez Park. With more than 100 acres, this park is nicely shaded and has two paved paths where you can run, bike or rollerblade. There are a several large fields, where they occasionally show free movies on the lawn. The kids have the option to play at several playgrounds, including a recent one added for older kids and another for toddlers and 3-year-olds. Dogs are welcome too. The dog park is nicely shaded and surrounded by a 4-foot fence.

Phillippe Park. Located in Safety Harbor, this is the oldest park in Pinellas County and also one of the coolest. The centerpiece is the Tocaboga Indian Mound – on the National Register of Historic Landmarks – where Native Americans held tribal ceremonies. You can climb to the top of the mound and also enjoy a mile-long walkway along the shore of Old Tampa Bay. There are covered picnic areas, a boat ramp, two playgrounds and lots of beautiful oak trees and tranquil vistas.

Lettuce Lake Park. First, it's huge, with 240 acres. Second, it has great bicycle and jogging trails. Third – best for the kids – it has picnic areas and boardwalks that meander through the low-lying forest and swamp, leading to an observation tower overlooking the lake. It's a great way for kids to enjoy an adventure into the wild and – oh no! – maybe even learn a thing or two about Florida fauna and wildlife. It costs just $2 per car to enter the park.

Will You give this to my Daddy?

As a Company, Southwest Airlines is going to support 'Red Fridays.'
Last week I was in Atlanta , Georgia attending a conference. While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer. I immediately turned around and witnessed One of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen.
Moving thru the terminal was a group of soldiers in their camos. As t.........hey began heading to their gate, everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering.
When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded and Cheered for, it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red-blooded American who still loves this country and supports our troops and their families.

Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work and home without fear or reprisal.

Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our Service men and women, a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years old ran up to one of the male soldiers. He kneeled down and said 'hi...'

The little girl then asked him if he would give something to her daddy for her...

The young soldier, who didn't look any older than maybe 22 himself, said he would try and what did she want to give to her daddy. Then suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek.

The mother of the little girl, who said her daughter's name was Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Marine and had been in Iraq for 11 months now. As the mom was explaining how much her daughter Courtney missed her father, the young soldier began to tear up.

When this temporarily single mom was done explaining her situation, all of the soldiers huddled together for a brief second... Then one of the other servicemen pulled out a military-looking walkie-talkie. They started playing with the device and talking back and forth on it..

After about 10-15 seconds of this, the young soldier walked back over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, 'I spoke to your daddy and he told me to give this to you.' He then hugged this little girl that he had just met and gave her a kiss on the cheek. He finished by saying 'your daddy told me to tell you that he loves you more than anything and he is coming home very soon.'

The mom at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the young soldier stood to his feet, he saluted Courtney and her mom. I was standing no more than 6 feet away from this entire event.

As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people resumed their applause. As I stood there applauding and looked around, there were very few dry eyes, including my own. That young soldier in one last act of selflessness turned around and blew a kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.

We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families and thank God for them and their sacrifices. At the end of the day, it's good to be an American.

RED FRIDAYS ----- Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the 'silent majority'. We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers.

Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday - and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that.. Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar will wear something red.

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers.

If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family. It will not be long before the USA is covered in RED.

Degas exhibit focuses on the poetry of motion

TAMPA - Open just a year in February, the new Tampa Museum of Art presents the second significant exhibition of works by a major artist.

A year ago it was Matisse in the main gallery. This time, it's another master of the impressionist era: Edgar Degas (1834-1917). And like the first one, this exhibition has its own distinctive focus.

Called "Degas: Form, Movement and the Antique," the spotlight is on Degas' sculptures, and especially on how well he created form and depicted movement.

"He captured the bathers, the horses, and more importantly, the dancers, right in the middle of a move," said Todd Smith, museum director.

Of the 47 works by in the show the French master, 32 are sculptures. The other 15 include oils, pastels, charcoals and prints. The main subject throughout is dancers, the iconic image with which Degas is most often associated.

"Degas did three main subjects in his lifetime, in both 3-D and 2-D: horses, bathers and dancers," said Smith. "Most of us know him from the dancers, and that's why the larger portion of our show is dedicated to the dancers."

The gem among them is a bronze sculpture of "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen," a widely recognized piece that has an intriguing history behind it.

With her body slouched forward, her head tilted upward and her hands linked behind her, she was first presented in wax with hair and real clothing at the 1881 Impressionist Exhibition in Paris. The critic's reaction was very negative, and Degas never again exhibited his three-dimensional works.

But he didn't stop making them.

"He continued to make sculptures in his studio, and throughout his career he made wax sculptures," said Smith. "They were large-scale enough to indicate that he wasn't just working on studies, he was still considering sculpture as an important part of what he was."

After Degas' death, his heirs found the wax models in his studio, and eventually bronze castings were made from several of these.

A second theme running throughout the show is Degas' interest in the Classical figure, a theme that fits nicely with the museum's extensive permanent collection of Greek and Roman artifacts. Accordingly, eight Greek Vases have been pulled and put on display to indicate the type of figure that may have inspired the artist.

"We're not trying to say he looked at a Greek vase and then painted a painting," explained Smith, "but that his early artistic life was influenced by his interest in the ancient world, and throughout his career he never left behind this interest in the ancient world."

In another gallery, 12 photographs from the museum's permanent collection document the types of places Degas might have seen when he visited Italy, places like museums and galleries.

"Like the Matisse Exhibition, this is another first for the region," said Smith. "And to be able to bring the 'Little Dancer' bronze cast here is a really important part of this offering. There are only 6 'Little Dancers' in the United States."

The one in the Tampa exhibition is on loan from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In all, a total of 20 public institutions have loaned art for this exhibition.

"I think that's a very good statement about our position in the art world," said Smith, adding, "This is one of those exhibitions that really allow us [the museum] to make a statement about who we are. We have worked very hard to get this building and to get this exhibition schedule well-defined. This is an important moment for us."
